TL;DR: I am super in love and happy and obnoxious about it rn. Come back next month for our regular programming. (Please enjoy the picture of us both looking a cross between exhausted and confused while preparing to sign our marriage certificate lol)
I know it’s early in this whole marriage thing to say this (a whole two-ish weeks lol) but…being married is better than I ever could have imagined. The wedding was amazing, yet the marriage is by far my favorite part.
But I know a few of you are hoping to read about the wedding, so I will oblige for those who care.
I will never forget waking up on June 13th and knowing that the day we had been planning and preparing for was finally there. I was alone, in a small cabin in the woods outside of Mount Rainier National Park. The sun was shining soft through the windows, birdsong chirping from every corner, a cool sigh of morning dew on the grass.
The main priority of the morning was assembling the cake. I had made it from scratch and hauled it all the way from Spokane to Mount Rainier, and now it was time to do the final coat of frosting and put it together, as well as decorate it (for which I had no idea what I was going to do besides the fact it would involve strawberries).
It was peaceful. Frosting, cutting strawberries, piping details, listening to piano instrumentals, sipping coffee, and devouring the breakfast burrito my mom had left for me the night before (thanks mom).
I didn’t feel nervous or stressed about what was coming (of course, that would come later, inevitably). I will always remember that morning spent working on our wedding cake, and how excited I was to finally see everything come together. How incredibly ready I was to marry my best friend and start our lives together (officially). And I was proud of how freaking cool that cake turned out, if I do say so myself.
As family members started to arrive to begin the setup process, a little bit of that inevitable tangle of nerves crept into my chest. A look at my husband to be squashed them down as he smiled at me across the yard, the same light in his eyes as I’m sure I had in mine. Corny, I know. But some things in life, it turns out, are just as sappy as the movies.
Of course, there were bumps along the way, some I wouldn’t hear about until after the wedding, but I was so blown away and blessed by how our family stepped up and made everything work so beautifully.
Every single person there (a precious 14 including Sal and myself) contributed in wonderful ways; we could not have done it without each of them.
In the end it was a day we will never forget. Not only because of our vows, but because of the overwhelming kindness of family.
Standing there under the arch my dearest had hand-built for us, the weight of the moment hit me like a wave. I felt like I was both spectator and participant. It was like no other feeling I had ever felt before.
I had never felt more deeply in love than that moment, looking at Salvador, such an incredible relief and excitement that somehow I got to be the one to share life with him.
It blesses me every day to know this man and love this man and be loved by this man. As I type this, he is cooking us a salmon dinner. He just delivered me a glass of white wine, apron-clad, and my heart could burst from the knowledge that we get to spend our lives together taking care of each other.
Every day at work I feel like I have an amazing book I want to keep reading waiting for me at home that I was forced to put down, but it isn’t a book waiting for me—it’s my husband.
Sometimes I have to remind myself that this is real life.
So, yeah. I’d say June has been a pretty great month in the realm of monthly updates. God is so good.
Thank you for reading and I hope no one feels nauseous from the syrupy prose I just gushed out.
