Here we are going to do a rundown of some key traits and skills you’ll need to succeed in marketing.
My sources for this piece are 10 Traits of A Great Marketer written by Cinita Miranda, my interview with Julie Bonn Blank, and my general understanding.
Observance
You must pay attention to the world if you want it to listen to you in return. It’s a give and take relationship. To observe is to seek understanding, and the pursuit of understanding is a main factor of marketing.
Along with observance comes curiosity. You should want to know why the things you see are the way they are. Why someone chooses this brand over that one, why someone chooses to wear the clothes they do, the devices in their hands, which calls to action they respond to and why.
Persistence
To succeed in marketing, one should be persistent in all pursuits. Whether that’s pursuing new ideas, keeping up with the market, or sustaining a working system.
Communication and Writing
A great marketer is driven by the desire to help others solve their challenges, and that takes strong communication skills.
With communication comes accountability to one’s actions, outcomes, and words. which is another recipe for success within this role.
Web Proficiency and Analytical Understanding
If you’re going to be in marketing, you need an understanding of the world wide web and all its branches. In this age, content is king and you need to be able to navigate it successfully and efficiently.
Adaptability
They seek challenges, and they don’t shy from new approaches and methods. Adaptability must be paired with innovation to keep an approach to the market relevant, and as stable as possible for its run. Adapt, create, collaborate.
In conclusion: Pay attention to your customers, learn about them, keep an eye on the changing market, work well with other departments, be persistent in your discovery, and curious in your observations.
The skills I’m working on are my web proficiency/efficiency, my knowledge of the field, and honing my natural observation and analytical thinking into a more valuable tool.
Those are my takeaways from this week of research, and I’m excited to further understand what it takes to succeed in marketing.
